Level 1 vs Level 2 —
Here's the Difference

Most EV owners aren't sure which charger they need. Here it is explained simply.

110V standard outlet for Level 1 EV charging
Level 1
Standard Outlet
3–5 km per hour of charging

Uses a standard 120V outlet. No special installation. Takes 30–50 hours for a full charge — slow for daily use.

Best for: Short daily commutes under 30 km, occasional EV use

Multiple EV chargers installed in a multi-residential building parking garage
Commercial
Commercial / Multi-Unit
Multiple vehicles · Load managed

For condos, offices, and commercial properties. Requires load calculation, management system, and building electrical assessment.

Best for: Condo boards, businesses, multi-unit buildings

Will My Electrical Panel
Handle a Charger?

This is what most EV owners worry about. Here's what actually determines the answer.

Your panel is likely ready if:

You have a 200A breaker panel with available space and a standard household load. A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 60A breaker — if your panel has room and available capacity, installation is straightforward.

An upgrade may be needed if:

You have a 100A panel, a fuse box, no available breaker slots, or a high existing load — such as two kitchens, a hot tub, or heavy appliances. We calculate your available capacity before recommending anything.

We assess your panel remotely — photos of your electrical panel and parking area are usually all we need to give you a straight quote. No site visit required in most cases.

4 Steps.
You Do Very Little.

Next-day installation available. Once we're on-site, most jobs take 3 to 5 hours — you charge your car the same night.

Permit & Install

We pull the ESA permit, install the charger cleanly and safely. Typically 3–5 hours on installation day.

Charge Tonight

ESA inspection passed. Charger tested and explained. Plug in your car — wake up to a full battery.

The Permit Isn't Paperwork. It's Protection.

Every Actus installation includes a pulled ESA permit and a passed inspection — not as an add-on, but as part of the job. An unpermitted charger can void your home insurance, void the charger's manufacturer warranty, and must be disclosed when you sell the house. You charge your car tomorrow. The paperwork protects you for years.

What Does It Cost?

Every job is different. Final price confirmed after panel photo assessment. Here are the typical ranges — tap any row to see what's included.

Range depends on scope — breaker work, load management, or sub-panel

  • Breaker replacement / panel space work: from $1,100
  • With load management system added: ~$2,100–$2,600
  • Sub-panel installation where required: $1,300–$2,300
  • All includes Level 2 charger installation + ESA permit
  • Single quote covers all work — no separate bills

Common Questions —

Hardwired means the charger is permanently wired directly to your panel — no outlet, no plug. It's the cleaner, more permanent install and delivers the full output your charger supports. This is the standard choice for most home installations. NEMA 14-50 is a 240V outlet the charger plugs into. It provides slightly less power and adds a connection point, but allows you to take the charger with you if you move. Note: in Ontario, a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed for an EV charger is dedicated to that purpose only — it cannot be used for other appliances. We advise on which makes more sense based on your charger, panel location, and situation. Both require an ESA permit.
It depends on your situation. If you have only a Tesla, we recommend installing the standard Tesla Wall Connector — it's purpose-built for your vehicle and delivers the full charging speed. If you have a Tesla and another EV, or you're planning to switch vehicles in the future, we recommend the Tesla Universal Wall Connector — it uses a CCS adapter and works with any EV brand. Both are hardwired, high-output chargers. We help you choose the right one during the assessment.
In Ontario, all EV charger installations require an ESA permit by law. Installing without a permit creates three serious risks: it can void your home insurance if there is ever an incident, it can void the charger's manufacturer warranty, and it can potentially affect your vehicle's warranty as well. When you sell your home, unpermitted electrical work must be disclosed and can delay or complicate the sale. We handle the permit on every single job — no exceptions.
For a standard Level 2 installation where the panel is ready, most jobs take 3 to 6 hours on installation day. If panel work is also required, allow a full day. We confirm the timeline during the assessment so you can plan accordingly.
A cheaper quote is almost always missing something. A complete installation includes: licensed labour, properly sized wiring, protected wire routing, dedicated 60A circuit, ESA permit, and inspection. Every item on that list has a real cost. When a quote comes in significantly lower, something is missing from that list. We won't remove any of these items — each one exists to protect you, your home, and your vehicle. What you get with Actus Electric is the complete job — done legally, inspected, and guaranteed.
It depends on the building's existing infrastructure. If the building already has an EV charging system in place, we can connect your spot to it — that's a straightforward installation job. If no infrastructure exists, this is a more complex project that requires engineering drawings before installation can begin. If drawings are already in place, we can quote and start work immediately. If not, we can help coordinate with a licensed engineer to get there. Either way, condo projects involve more parties and a longer timeline than a standard home install — we're upfront about that from the first conversation.
We install all major brands. If you already have a charger (Tesla Universal Wall Connector, Autel, Grizzl-E, EVIQO, ChargePoint, Flo, Enel X JuiceBox, etc.) we install it. If you haven't bought one yet, we advise on the best option for your vehicle and can direct you to the right source. We work with all makes and models.

"Actus Electric did a fantastic job with the EV installation. We planned the path from the breaker box to the garage and had a backup route ready. They discussed charger options and made suggestions to future-proof the system. On time, insured under WSIB and commercial liability, handled the remote inspection, and offered a warranty. Very satisfied."
