6 Reasons Toronto Homeowners
Upgrade Their Panel

Most homeowners find out they need an upgrade when something stops them — an insurance flag, a failed permit, a charger that won't install. If any of these apply, don't wait for the moment that forces your hand.

Installing an EV Charger

A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240V/40–60A circuit. Most older panels can't handle it without an upgrade.

Still Have a Fuse Box

Pre-1970s fuse panels are a fire hazard. Many Ontario insurers charge higher premiums or refuse coverage entirely.

Breakers Keep Tripping

If the same breaker trips regularly, your panel is overloaded. Resetting it is not a fix — it's a warning sign.

Panel Has No Available Capacity

Your panel may be full or close to its limit. Adding new circuits for EV chargers, heat pumps, or renovations may not be possible without exceeding safe capacity.

Renovation or Addition Planned

New kitchen, home addition, or workshop? You'll need more circuits — and the capacity to run them — before permits are issued.

Insurance Flagged Your Panel

Federal Pacific, or Zinsco/Sylvania panels are flagged by most Ontario insurers due to major safety risks. An upgrade isn't optional — it's required to maintain coverage.

4 Steps.
We Handle the Hard Part.

From quote to completed ESA inspection — we manage permits, utility coordination, and every detail in between.

1
Free Assessment

Send photos of your panel or we'll schedule a free site visit. We assess your current setup and recommend the right upgrade path.

2
Written Quote

Fixed price, full scope. You know exactly what you're getting before we start. No surprises on installation day.

3
Permit & Utility

We pull the ESA permit and coordinate your utility (Toronto Hydro / Alectra) for the disconnect and reconnect. You don't call anyone.

4
Install & Inspect

Panel installed in a single day. ESA inspection passed. Your home is fully powered, up to code, and ready for modern loads.

The Permit Isn't Optional. It's Your Insurance.

A panel upgrade without an ESA permit is illegal in Ontario — and voids your home insurance. If there's ever a fire or electrical incident, your insurer will check whether the work was permitted. If it wasn't, they won't pay the claim. Every Actus upgrade is permitted, inspected, and on record. Your home is protected the day we leave.

We visit your home before quoting. The price we agree on is the price you pay. Nothing added mid-job without your approval.
We handle everything. ESA permit, scheduling, utility notification. You don't call anyone. It's our responsibility start to finish.
The installation itself is completed within a single scheduled day, but the full process requires coordination. We need to schedule the utility company (Toronto Hydro or Alectra) to disconnect and reconnect power, and confirm the service entrance wiring can carry the upgraded load. Depending on the utility's availability, total timeline is typically 1–4 weeks from quote to completed inspection. We handle all scheduling — you don't need to follow up with anyone.
We plan access carefully before starting. We minimize any drywall work and always clean up completely. Your home looks the same when we leave.
A cheaper quote is almost always missing something. A complete panel upgrade includes: new panel hardware, ESA permit, utility coordination, licensed labour, inspection, grounding to current code, and a 2-year warranty. Every item on that list has a real cost. When a quote comes in significantly lower, something is missing from that list. We won't remove any of these items — each one exists to protect you, your home, and your family. What you get with Actus Electric is the complete job — done legally, inspected, and guaranteed.
Not always — and we'll tell you honestly after a site assessment. But "still works" doesn't mean safe or adequate. Fuse panels and undersized breaker panels create real risks: overheating, fire hazard, insurance issues, and inability to support EV chargers or modern appliances. If your panel is flagged by your insurer, you have no choice. If you're planning an EV charger or renovation, you'll need the upgrade before any permits can be issued. We won't recommend work you don't need — but we'll explain clearly what the risks are if you don't upgrade.
No. In Ontario, a panel upgrade without an ESA permit is illegal. More importantly — it voids your home insurance. If there's ever a fire or electrical incident, your insurer will investigate whether the work was permitted. If it wasn't, they won't pay the claim. Any electrician who offers to skip the permit is putting you at serious legal and financial risk to save themselves paperwork. We never skip permits. Ever.
Not always. After our free assessment, if the upgrade isn't necessary, we'll tell you directly. We don't sell work you don't need.

"Actus Electric completed our panel upgrade and it was a relief from start to finish. Scheduling actually stuck — no vague windows or chasing updates, just showed up when promised and got right to work. Everything felt steady and well managed, with clear steps on what was happening next. The crew moved efficiently but never rushed, kept things orderly throughout. Definitely keeping Actus Electric as the go-to for anything electrical going forward."

"Actus Electric upgraded our electrical panel and also installed an EV charger, subpanel, and added a new line for a heat pump. They organized and scheduled Alectra and ESA inspection to keep the process smooth. Everything was done very clean and professional, and the job passed inspection without any issues. I'm really happy with the service and will definitely call Actus Electric again."
